Deepak Dhar graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 2004. The multi-billion-dollar urban rental housing market was fraught with suspicion and friction.

Act II: The Genesis Bet

In 2015, alongside fellow IIT alumni Amarendra Sahu, Jitendra Jagadev, and Smruti Parida, Deepak co-founded NestAway in Bangalore. Their mission was to build India's premier managed home rental network: turning unrented urban homes into fully furnished, tech-enabled shared and private residences for young singles and families, requiring only two months of security deposit and handling rent collection digitally.

Act III: Zero-to-One PMF

NestAway unlocked immediate consumer love with its viral campaign 'Homes That Don't Discriminate,' welcoming tenants regardless of caste, religion, or relationship status. For homeowners, NestAway offered guaranteed on-time rent, verified tenant screenings, and complete home maintenance. In an ecosystem where landlords historically distrusted young migrants, NestAway served as the trusted institutional intermediary.

Act IV: The Flywheel of Scale

NestAway expanded rapidly across Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, and Pune, managing over 70,000 homes and housing hundreds of thousands of young professionals. The company raised over $110 million from top global investors including Tiger Global, Epiq Capital, Goldman Sachs, and UC-RNT Fund (Ratan Tata and University of California).

Act V: Crucible of Fire & Inflection Points

When the 2020 pandemic forced millions of tech employees to return to their hometowns to work remotely, urban co-living suffered catastrophic vacancy rates. Deepak helped navigate complex tenant exit settlements, renegotiated master landlord leases, and pioneered digital rent financialization before stepping down to pursue his next frontier in financial technology and embedded credit.

Act VI: Ecosystem Architecture

Deepak Dhar is celebrated for pioneering PropTech in India and dismantling decades-old social barriers in urban rental housing. As an active angel investor and advisor, Deepak supports early-stage founders in consumer fintech, real estate technology, and marketplace credit.
