MIT Plasma Science & Fusion Center
Bob Mumgaard completed his undergraduate studies in engineering at the University of Nebraska before earning his PhD in applied plasma physics from MIT. At MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center, he led research into high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets.
The Founding of Commonwealth Fusion Systems
In 2018, Mumgaard spun CFS out of MIT alongside fellow researchers and professors, backed by Bill Gatesโs Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Temasek, and Google.
SPARC & The Fusion Breakthrough
CFS successfully demonstrated a record-breaking 20-tesla high-temperature superconducting magnet, the core breakthrough needed for its SPARC tokamak reactor in Devens, Massachusetts, aimed at demonstrating net fusion energy gain.
