Alan Mamedi was born in Stockholm to Kurdish parents who had sought asylum from the Middle East. Fascinated by computing and mobile systems, Mamedi earned a degree in computer science from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
In 2009, Mamedi and his lifelong friend and co-founder Nami Zarringhalam bought new smartphones and noticed an aggravating dilemma: incoming calls from numbers not saved in phone address books were completely anonymous, leaving users vulnerable to relentless telemarketers, scammers, and harassers. In just one weekend, Mamedi and Zarringhalam created an online forum app to look up incoming numbers.
They launched Truecaller on an online Android and Symbian forum. The app exploded across India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa, where mobile fraud was rampant. Backed by Sequoia Capital, Atomico, and Kleiner Perkins, Mamedi navigated Truecaller to profitability and a Nasdaq Stockholm IPO in 2021, turning Truecaller into one of the most vital daily communication utilities on earth.
