Steven Schuurman grew up in the Netherlands and developed an early flair for commercializing open-source software architectures. In 2004, Schuurman co-founded SpringSource (originators of the ubiquitous Spring Framework for enterprise Java). In 2009, VMware acquired SpringSource for $420 million, marking one of the premier open-source exits of the era.
In 2012, Schuurman teamed up with open-source creator Shay Banon (inventor of Elasticsearch) alongside Uri Boness and Simon Willnauer to form Elasticsearch BV in Amsterdam. Schuurman understood that enterprise search was not just for websites—it was the foundational layer for real-time logging, metrics observability, and cybersecurity threat detection.
Under Schuurman's leadership as CEO from 2012 to 2017, Elastic expanded globally, building the legendary ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana). Elastic went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2018. Today, Schuurman is an active philanthropist and backer of European climate and deep-tech initiatives.
