Act I: The Catalyst

Nitin Saluja graduated in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 2007. After spending over five years in management consulting with Opera Solutions in the US and India, Nitin was struck by a glaring cultural anomaly: while coffee lovers had Starbucks and Cafe Coffee Day, the 90% of Indians who drank chai every single day were forced to choose between unhygienic roadside tea stalls or stale tea-bag concoctions in hotels.

Act II: The Genesis Bet

In November 2012, alongside fellow IITian Raghav Verma, Nitin founded Chaayos in Cyber City, Gurugram. Their founding philosophy was captured in the tagline: 'Experiments with Chai.' Nitin set out to build contemporary, vibrant chai cafes where guests could customize their daily cup in over 80,000 combinations—choosing milk thickness, ginger levels, tulsi, cardamom, and sugar preferences.

Act III: Zero-to-One PMF

Initial demand was explosive among young tech professionals in Gurgaon. However, as Chaayos expanded from one cafe to ten, Nitin encountered a fatal restaurant hurdle: human error. Different kitchen staff added varying amounts of spices, resulting in inconsistent taste that frustrated loyal daily customers. As a mechanical engineer, Nitin built the solution himself: inventing the proprietary 'Chai Monk' automated brewing robot.

Act IV: The Flywheel of Scale

The Chai Monk machine transformed Chaayos from a standard cafe chain into a high-margin foodtech juggernaut. With an IoT-connected touch screen, the Chai Monk brewed a fresh, personalized cup of chai with natural whole spices in under two minutes with zero human intervention. Backed by Tiger Global, Elevation Capital, and Alpha Wave Ventures, Chaayos raised over $85 million, expanding to more than 200 cafes across Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chandigarh.

Act V: Crucible of Fire & Inflection Points

When office lockdowns forced the closure of corporate tech-park cafes in 2020, Nitin pivoted Chaayos to digital delivery: launching customized vacuum-insulated kettle packaging that kept chai piping hot for 45 minutes. Concurrently, he launched packaged chai premixes, native facial recognition ordering kiosks, and instant-delivery breakfast foods on Blinkit and Swiggy.

Act VI: Ecosystem Architecture

Nitin Saluja completely redefined how modern India drinks tea, turning a humble roadside commodity into an aspirational, technology-driven lifestyle brand. An active angel investor, Nitin mentors consumer D2C, QSR, and food automation startups across the country.

Act VII: The Long Horizon

Nitin envisions Chaayos as an international Indian beverage icon. By deploying next-generation AI Chai Monk machines in international transit hubs, airports, and global metros, Nitin is building a multi-generational hospitality brand that exports India's rich tea heritage worldwide.
