In 2014, hiring a home service professional in an Indian city was a chaotic exercise in frustration. If an air conditioner broke down or a carpenter was needed, homeowners had to call unverified local repairmen who showed up late, charged arbitrary prices, lacked genuine spare parts, and offered zero safety accountability. On the other side of the transaction, skilled blue-collar plumbers, beauticians, and electricians were trapped in poverty, exploited by middlemen contractors. Abhiraj Bhal set out to build Urban Company to heal both sides of that broken social contract.
Act I: IIT Kanpur, The Boston Consulting Group, and IIM-A
A graduate in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, Abhiraj spent several years as a management consultant at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), advising Fortune 500 leadership on operational excellence. Teaming up with fellow entrepreneurs Varun Khaitan and Raghav Chandra, Abhiraj recognized that service delivery in Asiaโs burgeoning megacities was ripe for full-stack platform disruption. In November 2014, they launched UrbanClap (later rebranded as Urban Company).
Act II: The Full-Stack Transformation
Initially, UrbanClap operated as a matchmaking directory connecting customers with freelance professionals. Abhiraj quickly realized that lead-generation directories failed because they could not guarantee service quality. He made a bold strategic pivot: Urban Company transitioned into a full-stack managed marketplace. The platform standardized pricing, took responsibility for quality control, trained every technician in-house, supplied authentic standardized toolkits, and backed every booking with customer insurance.
Act III: Elevating Partner Dignity & Micro-Entrepreneurship
Abhiraj anchored Urban Companyโs philosophy in partner welfare. Professionals on the platform receive comprehensive health and accident insurance, access to micro-credit loans for purchasing tools, and structured upskilling certifications accredited by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Urban Company service partners earn two to three times more net income than unorganized offline workers, transforming the socio-economic trajectory of tens of thousands of working-class families.
Act IV: The Beauty & Home Care Dominance
Urban Company transformed personal grooming by bringing salon services directly into the living room. Utilizing single-use sealed hygiene kits, disposable sheets, and background-verified female beauticians, Urban Companyโs salon-at-home category became a massive cultural phenomenon. Millions of urban women abandoned traditional brick-and-mortar salons in favor of privacy, comfort, and professional hygiene at home.
Act V: Expanding into Hardware: Native Smart Appliances
Observing that customers constantly complained about low-quality spare parts and water purifiers requiring frequent filter replacements, Abhiraj directed Urban Company into hardware innovation. In 2023, they launched Nativeโa proprietary line of smart RO water purifiers requiring filter replacements only once every two years, backed by automated IoT remote diagnostics.
Act VI: International Expansion Across Dubai & The Gulf
Urban Company proved that its service SOPs could transcend developing borders. Expanding into Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, and Singapore, the company won over expatriate and local populations with Japanese-level punctuality, verified background safety, and standardized service quality.
Act VII: Industry Transformation & Strategic Legacy
- Organized the At-Home Services Industry: Replaced informal, unpredictable roadside labor with hospital-grade hygiene and standardized digital pricing.
- Socio-Economic Upward Mobility: Created dignified livelihoods and life insurance for over 50,000 gig-economy workers across Asia.
- Global Product Expansion: Proved that an Indian service-tech platform can successfully export operational discipline to high-income international markets like the UAE and Singapore.
