Born in Koblenz, Germany, Tobi received a computer from his parents at age 10 and left formal schooling to pursue a computer programming apprenticeship. In 2002, he moved to Ottawa, Canada, where he met his future wife and decided to launch an online snowboard store called Snowdevil.
Dissatisfied with clumsy e-commerce software of the era, Tobi wrote his own custom store using the brand-new Ruby on Rails web framework. Soon, other merchants were asking to license the software rather than buy snowboards.
Tobi pivoted to launch Shopify in 2006. Built on principles of merchant sovereignty and anti-monopoly commerce, Shopify enables millions of independent creators and retail empires (from Gymshark to Heinz) to control their own digital storefronts without relying on closed marketplaces.
