Robert Vis started MessageBird from his spare bedroom in Amsterdam without taking any venture capital. Driven by extreme commercial grit, Vis secured telecom aggregator agreements and built SMS gateway connections directly to telecommunications carriers across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
For the first six years, Vis resisted Silicon Valley funding, running the business profitably with just a handful of engineers. In 2017, Vis joined Y Combinator and accepted a $60 million Series A from Accel and Atomico. MessageBird rapidly expanded its suite to include live chat, voice APIs, and WhatsApp Business integration, competing directly with Twilio.
In 2020 and 2021, Vis orchestrated an $800M Series C with Eurazeo and Tiger Global, acquiring US email deliverability giant SparkPost for $600M. In 2024, Vis rebranded the company to Bird, doubling down on radical pricing transparency and full-stack omnichannel CRM.
