Game Programmer to OpenFeint Exit
Jason Citron grew up coding games in Long Island, New York, graduating with a degree in game design from Full Sail University. In 2009, he founded mobile social gaming network OpenFeint, selling it in 2011 to Japanese gaming company GREE for $104 million.
From Hammer & Chisel to Discord
In 2012, Citron founded gaming studio Hammer & Chisel to build iPad MOBA game Fates Forever. While the game was a modest commercial success, the real-time VoIP voice chat system Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy built to talk during matches was phenomenal.
The Universal Chat Infrastructure
Citron pivoted the company to launch Discord in 2015. With zero latency voice channels, customizable servers, and rich bot APIs, Discord became the default communication fabric for gamers, crypto communities, AI developers, and study groups, valued at $15 billion.
