Varun Khaitan graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the premier Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 2009. Moving to the United States, Varun worked as a systems engineer at Qualcomm in San Diego, developing cutting-edge mobile telecommunication protocols. Returning to India in 2013, Varun teamed up with his IIT Kanpur hostel mate Abhiraj Bhal to launch Cinema Box—an in-flight and long-distance bus video streaming service. When Cinema Box ran into severe hardware scaling hurdles, the founders took a step back to analyze everyday Indian pain points: finding a dependable electrician, carpenter, or salon professional was an exhausting, unreliable ordeal riddled with opaque pricing and zero accountability.

In November 2014, alongside Abhiraj Bhal and Raghav Chandra, Varun launched UrbanClap (later rebranded as Urban Company). The early local services market was dominated by search directories (like Justdial) that simply sold consumer phone numbers as leads to dozens of random contractors. Varun made the counter-intuitive bet: Urban Company would eliminate lead generation entirely. Instead, it would operate as a full-stack managed marketplace, standardizing service pricing, training professionals, supplying certified tools, and guaranteeing customer satisfaction with insurance warranties.

Act III: Zero-to-One Product Market Fit & The Valley of Death

Standardizing human-delivered services is infinitely harder than delivering physical packages. Varun took charge of operational training, technician onboarding, and service standardization. Urban Company set up physical training academies across major metros where independent beauticians, plumbers, and appliance technicians underwent multi-week vocational courses. Varun equipped service professionals with specialized toolkits, smart diagnostic equipment, and standardized consumable products. When urban consumers experienced salon treatments and air-conditioner servicing delivered on-time by uniformed, certified technicians, customer ratings hit industry record highs.

With marquee backing from Tiger Global, Accel, Prosus, and Vy Capital, Varun guided Urban Company into a dominant multinational home-services platform.
