While flipping burgers at Burger King to pay for his studies at the Stockholm School of Economics, Sebastian Siemiatkowski teamed up with Niklas Adalberth and Victor Jacobsson to enter an annual entrepreneurship contest. Their concept—allowing online shoppers to receive goods before paying—was rejected by the judges as fundamentally unviable.
Undeterred, they launched Klarna anyway. By absorbing merchant fraud risk and introducing smooth 4-installment interest-free consumer payments, Klarna expanded across 45 countries with 150 million active shoppers, winning backing from Michael Moritz (Sequoia), SoftBank, and Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
