Prashant Tandon graduated in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 2001 and earned his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. After working in management consulting with McKinsey & Company and operational roles at Unilever and MapMyIndia, Prashant observed an alarming consumer reality: India had thousands of branded generic medicines with identical chemical compositions, yet price variations exceeded 500% between brands. Patients were blindly purchasing expensive medicines because they had no access to transparent pharmaceutical data.

Act II: The Genesis Bet

In 2011, Prashant co-founded Healthkart alongside Sameer Maheshwari. Within the company, Prashant spearheaded a specialized vertical called HealthkartPlus to bring transparency to medicine information. In 2015, Prashant spun off the vertical into an independent entity, 1mg (later Tata 1mg), alongside Gaurav Agarwal. Act III: Zero-to-One PMF

Prashant built India's largest medical database, cataloging chemical salts, side effects, precautions, and low-cost generic substitutes for hundreds of thousands of medicines. When consumers realized they could search their prescribed high-cost brand and instantly find FDA-approved substitutes for 70% cheaper, 1mg went viral. Prashant then built licensed fulfillment pharmacies that verified physical doctor prescriptions before dispatch, ensuring complete regulatory compliance.

Act IV: The Flywheel of Scale

1mg expanded from online pharmacy into home diagnostic sample collection, partnering with NABL-accredited diagnostic labs and building its own pathology network. The company raised funding from top global healthcare investors including Maverick Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Corrum Capital. In June 2021, in a landmark transaction that validated Prashant's vision, Indian conglomerate Tata Sons acquired a majority stake in 1mg, integrating it as the crown jewel of Tata Digital and rebranding it as Tata 1mg.
