Shashank ND graduated in Computer Science from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, in 2009. During his final year of college in 2008, his father needed complex knee surgery. When Shashank attempted to get a medical second opinion from an orthopedic specialist in the US, he was shocked by how difficult it was: medical records were trapped in physical paper files, X-ray films were smudged, and doctors had no digital records. Shashank realized that healthcare was decades behind other industries in technology adoption.

Act II: The Genesis Bet

In 2008, alongside his college classmate Abhinav Lal, Shashank founded Practo from their college hostel room. Their first product, Practo Ray, was a cloud-based Practice Management Software for doctors. Instead of building a consumer app first, Shashank understood that to organize healthcare, he first had to digitize the doctor's clinic—enabling doctors to manage appointments, store electronic health records (EHR), and generate digital prescriptions on the cloud.

Act III: Zero-to-One PMF

Shashank personally walked door-to-door visiting dental clinics, pediatricians, and general practitioners across Bangalore, convincing skeptical doctors to replace paper diaries with Practo Ray. As tens of thousands of doctors adopted the software, Shashank unlocked a brilliant inflection point in 2013: launching Practo.com, a consumer healthcare discovery platform. Patients could now search verified doctors, read authentic patient reviews, and book instant clinic appointments online.

Act IV: The Flywheel of Scale

Practo expanded rapidly from clinic discovery into an integrated healthcare super-app: online video consultations, medicine delivery, diagnostic lab tests, and hospital surgery assistance under Practo Care Surgeries. Backed by marquee global investors including Tencent, Sofina, Sequoia Capital, and Matrix Partners, Practo raised over $230 million, expanding across India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, connecting tens of millions of patients to over 100,000 verified doctors.

Act V: Crucible of Fire & Inflection Points

When the COVID-19 pandemic swept India and physical clinics shut down, Practo became India's critical digital healthcare lifeline. Shashank scaled telemedicine infrastructure overnight, processing millions of video consultations per month and partnering with state governments to provide free virtual doctor screenings.
