Emory Computer Science to Plaid
William Hockey graduated from Emory University with degrees in computer science and economics. In 2013, he co-founded Plaid alongside Zach Perret, serving as Chief Technology Officer and personally authoring the early reverse-engineered banking API protocols.
Stepping Down to Buy a Bank: Column
After stepping back from daily Plaid operations, Hockey identified an even deeper architectural vulnerability: all fintech apps were piggybacking on slow middleman sponsor banks. In 2021, Hockey and his wife Annie bought a 90-year-old California bank for $50M and rebuilt it into Columnโa direct API-native chartered bank for builders.
Redefining Bank Infrastructure
Column processes billions for Brex, Plaid, and enterprise fintechs, clearing directly through the Federal Reserve without intermediary service bureaus.
