Shashank Kumar earned his degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Roorkee in 2012, graduating with top honors. A gifted programmer who had built complex systems since his teenage years, Shashank joined Microsoft as a software engineer in Redmond, Washington. While working on global distributed systems, Shashank kept a close eye on the burgeoning software landscape in India. He realized that while Indian programmers were exceptionally talented, they were paralyzed by third-rate software tooling and archaic banking APIs that felt decades behind the modern web.

Leaving Microsoft, Shashank joined forces with his IIT roommate Harshil Mathur in 2014 to build Razorpay. Shashank took ownership of system architecture, security cryptography, and API design. If Razorpay created beautiful, copy-paste API documentation with client SDKs across Python, PHP, Ruby, Node, and Java, developers would demand that their companies switch to Razorpay.

Building fintech infrastructure in India required interfacing with fragile, legacy mainframe bank servers that crashed under sudden load spikes. Shashank engineered resilient fallback architectures with asynchronous message queues, automatic retries, and distributed state machines that gracefully absorbed banking outages. Razorpay's server uptime crossed 99.99%, making it the most reliable payment gateway in Indian financial history.

Act IV: The Flywheel of Scale & Strategic Moats

As Razorpay's transaction volumes multiplied by orders of magnitude, Shashank led the expansion into complex banking technology. He engineered Razorpay POS (in-store card payment machines following the acquisition of Ezetap), Curlec in Southeast Asia, and cutting-edge UPI AutoPay subscription systems.
