MIT Sloan Automotive Lab to Rivian Genesis
Growing up in Rockledge, Florida, RJ Scaringe restored vintage Porsches before completing his master’s and PhD in mechanical engineering at MIT’s Sloan Automotive Laboratory. In 2009, he founded the company that became Rivian.
The Pivot to Electric Adventure
Rejecting early sports car prototypes, Scaringe recognized that electric pickups and SUVs represented the most profitable, culturally impactful automotive segment. He engineered the skateboard platform that spawned the R1T truck and R1S SUV.
Amazon Fleet Partnership & Historic IPO
Scaringe secured a landmark order from Amazon for 100,000 custom electric delivery vans and led Rivian’s 2021 IPO—the sixth largest in US history—establishing Rivian as a premier American EV manufacturer alongside a $5B partnership with Volkswagen Group.
