Hemesh Singh

Act I: The Catalyst & Formative Crucible

Hemesh Singh completed his Bachelor's in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) Allahabad in 2013. A natural software hacker with deep expertise in real-time multimedia protocols, Hemesh joined Gaurav Munjal's early campus venture Flat.to (acquired by CommonFloor) as Chief Technology Officer. When Gaurav decided to institutionalize Unacademy in 2015, Hemesh was the obvious choice to lead engineering. Hemesh understood that while watching pre-recorded YouTube videos was educational, it lacked the electric accountability, social presence, and instant doubt-clearing of an authentic physical classroom.

Act II: The Genesis Bet & Counter-Intuitive Architecture

In 2015, Hemesh joined Gaurav and Roman to incorporate Unacademy. Hemesh's architectural bet was bold: while most EdTech startups used third-party video embeds (like Vimeo or YouTube), Hemesh engineered proprietary WebRTC live-streaming infrastructure. His system enabled ultra-low-latency two-way video, dynamic digital whiteboards, real-time live chat with anti-spam filtering, and instant in-class polling that could handle tens of thousands of simultaneous students per educator.

Act III: Zero-to-One Product Market Fit & The Valley of Death

When Unacademy launched Unacademy Plus in 2019, the platform experienced explosive traffic surges. Live classes regularly saw 20,000 to 50,000 students in a single session. Hemesh engineered distributed edge caching and custom video transcoding pipelines that dynamically downscaled video quality for students on erratic 2G/3G connections without interrupting audio or whiteboard synchronization. Even in remote villages with single-bar mobile network signals, students could attend live AIIMS and UPSC preparation classes without buffering.

Act IV: The Flywheel of Scale & Strategic Moats

Under Hemesh's technical leadership, Unacademy scaled to support over 2 billion minutes of live watch-time per month. Hemesh built an elite engineering and design organization in Bengaluru, introducing Graphy (a platform for independent creators to launch courses) and integrating cutting-edge machine learning recommendation engines that mapped individual student knowledge gaps.

Act V: Asymmetric Inflection Points & Cultural Impact

Hemesh Singh demonstrated that Indian software engineering could build real-time interactive video infrastructure that rivaled global gaming platforms in concurrency and latency. He made live digital classrooms accessible to millions of students across tier-2, tier-3, and rural India.

Act VI: Ecosystem Architecture & Capital Compounders

Hemesh is widely respected in Bengaluru's engineering community for his architectural discipline and focus on developer productivity. He actively invests in early-stage developer tools, streaming infrastructure, and interactive consumer software.

Act VII: The Long Horizon & The Frontier Manifesto

Hemesh continues to drive Unacademy's technical vision, pioneering generative AI-powered personalized tutoring avatars and automated doubt resolution. His mission remains steady: utilizing real-time software engineering to ensure that every student receives the dedicated attention of a world-class mentor.
