Ankit Garg graduated from IIT Roorkee with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 2010. His formative career began at Bayer MaterialScience (now Covestro), where he worked directly on the polymer chemistry, polyurethane foam formulations, and reaction injection molding behind modern seating and insulation. Later, while running a small startup manufacturing foam components for automotive and bedding companies, Ankit discovered the dark underbelly of the mattress industry: legacy brands were using cheap chalk-filled foams that degraded within months, while slapping multi-thousand percent retail markups on the finished product.

Act II: The Genesis Bet & Counter-Intuitive Architecture

Armed with deep domain knowledge of chemical polymers, Ankit teamed up with Chaitanya Ramalingegowda in 2016 to launch Wakefit. Ankit made the counter-intuitive decision that Wakefit would never rely on third-party contract manufacturers. He rented a small warehouse on the outskirts of Bengaluru, bought high-precision CNC contour cutting machines, and personally formulated Wakefit's proprietary high-resilience and memory foams. By controlling the chemistry from day one, Ankit guaranteed that Wakefit mattresses offered orthopedic spinal alignment that outperformed traditional cotton and coir beds.

Act III: Zero-to-One Product Market Fit & The Valley of Death

In the early days, Ankit worked 18-hour shifts on the factory floor, supervising foam foaming reactions, stitching mattress covers, and personally conducting customer service calls. When customers complained about mattress sag or overheating, Ankit went straight back to the chemical laboratory—introducing open-cell foam structures that allowed air circulation and prevented heat traps. Wakefit introduced roll-packing technology, using hydraulic presses to vacuum-pack mattresses into cylinders one-third their size, slashing freight costs and enabling nationwide doorstep delivery.

Act IV: The Flywheel of Scale & Strategic Moats

Under Ankit's operational stewardship, Wakefit established some of Asia's most technologically advanced home manufacturing mega-campuses spanning over 1 million square feet. Ankit automated timber seasoning, robotic woodworking, and automated mattress packaging lines. This immense vertical integration protected Wakefit's gross margins against commodity raw material inflation and enabled lightning-fast fulfillment across 19,000+ Indian pin codes.
